The Halloween adventure nobody asked for, but every dog would absolutely love.
Halloween is here, and while the humans are busy planning costumes, decorating porches, and buying candy, we’ve been wondering something very important at Big Head Barkery…
What if DOGS went trick-or-treating?
Not just tagging along with their humans.
We’re talking full participation. Costumes. Treat bags. Doorbells. Neighborhood drama.
Because let’s be honest, every dog would approach Halloween a little differently.
And we’re pretty sure it would go something like this…
🐕 The Golden Retriever: Everyone’s Best Friend
Costume: A pumpkin. Because Mom said it was adorable.
Trick-or-treating strategy: Make friends with absolutely everyone.
Stops at the first house.
Gets a treat.
Gets a belly rub.
Gets invited inside.
Forgets why they’re there.
Thirty minutes later, the entire neighborhood is standing in the driveway telling the Golden Retriever what a good dog they are.
Candy collected: Zero.
New best friends: 47.
Would do it again? ABSOLUTELY.
🐾 The Beagle: Professional Candy Investigator
Costume: Sherlock Bones.
Trick-or-treating strategy: Follow the nose.
Knows which houses have treats before anyone rings the doorbell.
Can detect a peanut butter biscuit from three streets away.
Refuses to leave until every suspicious smell has been thoroughly investigated.
Somehow ends up in the neighbor’s kitchen.
Nobody knows how.
Candy collected: Not telling.
Treats located: ALL OF THEM.
Would do it again? Already planning next year.
🐺 The Husky: The Neighborhood Drama Queen
Costume: Absolutely not.
Mom purchased a $45 werewolf costume.
The Husky has filed a formal complaint.
There was screaming.
There was rolling on the floor.
There was a dramatic refusal to walk.
Eventually agrees to wear a tiny Halloween bandana.
Screams at a plastic skeleton for 20 minutes.
Candy collected: None.
Noise complaints: Several.
Would do it again? Only if allowed to choose the costume.
🐶 The French Bulldog: Fashionably Late
Costume: A tiny dinosaur. Custom-made, obviously.
Trick-or-treating strategy: Look fabulous.
Arrives 30 minutes late.
Gets photographed at every house.
Walks approximately two driveways.
Decides this is exhausting.
Demands to be carried.
Candy collected: Zero.
Instagram photos: 86.
Would do it again? Yes, but next year we’re hiring a driver.
🐩 The Poodle: Best Dressed on the Block
Costume: A handcrafted masterpiece with coordinating accessories.
Trick-or-treating strategy: Win Halloween.
The costume has layers.
The costume has sparkle.
The costume may have its own Instagram account.
Refuses to stand next to the Labrador wearing a bedsheet.
Candy collected: Irrelevant.
Costume contest trophies: Expected.
Would do it again? Only if there’s a red carpet.
🐕 The Labrador: Here for the Snacks
Costume: A hot dog.
Trick-or-treating strategy: Eat first. Ask questions never.
Arrives at the first house.
Attempts to eat the treat bag.
Attempts to eat the pumpkin.
Attempts to eat the decorative hay.
Human intervenes.
Candy collected: Zero.
Things attempted to eat: 19.
Would do it again? Wait…there’s MORE food?
🐾 The Chihuahua: Head of Neighborhood Security
Costume: A tiny vampire cape.
Trick-or-treating strategy: Protect the entire neighborhood.
Barks at the first inflatable ghost.
Barks at the second inflatable ghost.
Barks at a leaf.
Barks at a child dressed as a banana.
Nobody has been authorized to approach.
Candy collected: Classified.
Threats neutralized: 37.
Would do it again? The neighborhood needs me.
🐕 The Dachshund: Small Dog, Big Plans
Costume: A hot dog bun. Again.
Trick-or-treating strategy: Maximum determination.
Has been trick-or-treating for six minutes.
Already convinced there is something important under someone’s porch.
Refuses to leave.
Human negotiates.
Dachshund wins.
Candy collected: None.
Arguments won: All of them.
Would do it again? After finishing this investigation.
🐶 The Pit Bull: The Sweetest Little Pumpkin
Costume: Pink fairy wings and a tutu.
Trick-or-treating strategy: Collect compliments.
Walks up to the first house.
Immediately sits.
Offers a paw.
Receives approximately 47 compliments.
Wiggles so hard the wings fall off.
Candy collected: None.
Hearts melted: The entire neighborhood.
Would do it again? YES! Are we going to see more people?!
🐾 The Mixed Breed: The Wild Card
Costume: Nobody knows. Mom says it’s a dragon. Dad says it’s a taco.
Trick-or-treating strategy: Unpredictable.
Makes friends with the Golden Retriever.
Joins the Beagle’s investigation.
Barks with the Chihuahua.
Steals the Labrador’s hot dog costume.
Falls asleep in the car on the way home.
Candy collected: Somehow, three tennis balls.
Would do it again? BEST. NIGHT. EVER.
🎃 One Very Important Halloween Rule
As much fun as it is imagining dogs going door to door collecting treats, human Halloween candy is not for dogs.
Chocolate and products containing xylitol (sometimes labeled birch sugar) can be especially dangerous. Candy wrappers and other sweets can cause problems, too.
Keep the human candy out of reach and celebrate with treats made specifically for dogs.
And remember, not every pup enjoys costumes, crowds, or spooky decorations. If your dog would rather spend Halloween curled up on the couch, that’s perfectly fine.
More treats for the couch potatoes!
